BEAUMONT - Thousands of travelers are taking routes through Southeast Texas to reach their Thanksgiving destinations.
Juan Arriaga drove from Gonzales, Louisiana to Katy on Wednesday night to beat the holiday rush.
"Usually everybody wants to get their families on Thanksgiving day, which is usually not a good idea. It's better to do it a day or two days before,” Arriaga said.
According to AAA estimates, Arriaga is one of the estimated 50 million people across the country that are traveling for the holiday.
His five-hour commute pales in comparison to the 12-hour trip by the Moncada family from Indianola, Mississippi.
"From home to Lafayette I did half, then from Lafayette to Austin, he's doing the rest," Cristian Moncada said.
The 50 million travelers are more than any Thanksgiving day since 2005, according to AAA.
