Texas takes out Notre Dame in Double OT

KVUE's Mike Barnes has the highlights of Texas beating Notre Dame.

AUSTIN - Powered by a dual-quarterback attack, the Texas Longhorns made a statement to a national audience by taking out the ninth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 50-47 in double-overtime.

Texas' freshman quarterback Shane Buechele got the start and wasted no time making an impact. By the time the game ended, Buechele was 16-26 for 280 yards, two touchdowns, and just one interception.

But it was senior quarterback Tyrone Swoopes who ended up stealing the show with his 18-wheeler package. With Texas needing a touchdown in the second overtime, Swoopes lined up and bounced off defenders before stretching for the end zone in a play that will live in Texas football history.

But Texas was pushed throughout the game by Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer. Once Notre Dame settled on using Kizer, he lit up Texas' defense. Kizer ended the night  with an overthrow, but his stats were second to none on the first weekend of the college football season.

Kizer finished 15 of 24 for 215 yards, 5 touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also ran the ball 13 times for 77 yards and a touchdown. It was a Heisman worthy performance in a loss.

For Texas head coach Charlie Strong, it was a signature win that he desperately needed in his third season at UT. It put the program back into the national conversation and served notice to the rest of the Big 12 that the Longhorns are back.

It was only one game, but for the Longhorns and their fans; it was the best start to a season in years and maybe a harbinger of a magical season in Austin.
