As part of 12News' investigation into the rising prices of many prescription drugs, we reached out to Congressmen Randy Weber and Brian Babin, as well as Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, to find out what they're doing to protect consumers.
Phil Novak, Sen. Cruz's press secretary, sent us the following response:
Out-of-pocket costs for drugs are skyrocketing because Obamacare provides coverage in name only. Family budgets across the nation have taken a huge hit while consumers have decreased access to crucial drugs and treatments. And while American families suffer, the Obama administration is bailing out the big insurance companies who helped pass Obamacare in the first place. Obamacare has failed. The solution is not to bail out insurers with billions of taxpayer dollars — we must repeal Obamacare and restore health care competition that will expand access to care and bring down costs.
We can also bring down high drug prices if we force drug companies to compete. Right now drugs that are approved and sold overseas are saving millions of lives – but Americans can’t access them because of FDA red tape. Sen. Cruz has introduced legislation to allow safe and effective drugs and devices in developed countries to receive expedited approval here in the U.S. Even FDA studies have shown that as more competition enters the drug markets, prices go down. And not only will prices go down, American lives will be saved. If a drug is good enough to save lives in Europe or Asia, why not in America too?
