Port Arthur man flees traffic stop after being found in stolen car

A Port Arthur man is facing multiple charges after police say he was found in a stolen car, gave a fake name to police and fled during a traffic stop.

Beaumont police say Milton Joe Harris, 26, was stopped Sunday night at Newfield and S. Major after reportedly speeding on College St.

Officers say Harris gave a fictitious name and when the officer approached the car again, the driver took off.

He drove to Landis and then to an alley behind the 9200 block of Mapes, where he abandoned the car and fled on foot.

Officers say they found Harris behind a house in the 9400 block of Landis.

Police say during their investigation they discovered that Harris had taken the car from an address on Mapes St. while the owner was asleep.

The owner of the car filed unauthorized use of a motor vehicle charges.

Harris was arrested and taken to the Jefferson County Jail. He's facing Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Evading Detention with a Motor Vehicle, Fail to Identify and traffic warrant charges.
