Orange County commissioners will buy a new nativity scene after returning one they recently purchased.
Judge Stephen Carlton said the display is too small and would not look good on the courthouse lawn. They decided to replace their former nativity scene in October because it is broken and over 20-years-old. Recently, there has been some backlash from groups in the county for displaying a nativity scene outside of city hall in the city of Orange. The groups wanted more than only Christian oriented symbols on display.
“A nativity scene is a traditional Christmas scene that has been in court houses and city halls for 400 years, so it's something ingrained in American history," said Judge Stephen Carlton.
The commissioners approved plans to spend around 8,000 dollars for the new nativity.
