ST. LOUIS, MO. - The search for a suspect wanted in connection to the ambush style shooting of a St. Louis police officer Sunday evening, ended early Monday morning around 1:30 a.m. with the suspect being killed following a shoot out with officers in south St. Louis, near the intersection of Smiley and Leola Avenues.

Police say that during the overnight investigation, officers found the suspect in a vehicle and approached from behind. He fled on foot from vehicle and fired shots at officers.
No officers were injured.
Officers on the scene returned fire, striking and killing the suspect. Police say they recovered the suspect's weapon.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson spoke to the media around 2:15 a.m Monday
The police officer was shot in south St. Louis Sunday night.
The shooting occurred at the intersection of Hampton and Pernod Ave just before 7:30 p.m.
Speaking to the media, St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said the officer, a 20-year veteran of the force, was ambushed by an individual who shot out the police officer's window. The officer was shot twice in the face.
The officer then called for assistance following the shooting. He is currently listed in critical, but stable condition.
Dotson said St. Louis city officers will have two officers per squad car for the time being.
