PORT ARTHUR - A Port Arthur man told police he accidentally shot himself after officer found him with a gunshot wound to his leg late Monday night.
Residents at the Prince Hall Apartment complex like Tatanisha Kirklan said hearing gunshots in the neighborhood is not unusual.
“I’m just praying that nobody gets killed,” said Kirklan.
Kirklan said she was inside her apartment when all of a sudden she heard her neighbor’s girlfriend yell out that he was shot.
“I heard her say he was shot, it was not the first time we have heard things like that before,” said Kirklan.
Officers responded to a shots fired call at the Prince Hall Apartments in the 900 block of West 14th Street at about 11 p.m. Monday according to a release from the Port Arthur Police Department.
When officers arrived they found a male resident who had been shot in the leg according to the release.
"I thought it was fire crackers but it came out being gunfire," said resident Harry Chevalier.
Chevalier said he just got home from work and kids were playing outside with fireworks having a good time.
"Right when I closed my door I heard all these shots, different shots," said Chevalier.
He said he saw several people scattered around the complex in a panic.
Residents said their biggest concern is for the safety of the children who live in the area.
"This is all the time, this is all the time and this has to stop I'm just scared for the kids," said Kirklan.
The man, who was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, admitted to officers during their investigation that he had accidentally shot himself the
Port Arthur police do not believe any suspects were involved in the shooting.
