Sheriff: More than 30 sent to hospital in Chambers County I-10 wreck

CHAMBERS COUNTY - An accident involving more than a dozen shutdown westbound lanes Interstate 10 near Anahuac and injured more than 30 people.

The accident involved multiple 18-wheelers, at least one of which that was carrying hazardous materials, according to Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne. He says at least five different ambulances were sent to hospital and that motorists should expect IH-10 westbound lanes to remains closed "for awhile."

The cause of the wreck was weather related and caused a chain-reaction according to the Department of Public Safety. Seven people individuals were transported to the hospital while others were treated on-scene, according to DPS.

"We were scared." Brittany Sumner, a witness of the wreck said. "Our car stopped just in time. The jack-knifed truck almost hit us head-on, but we didn’t get hit at all."

"We saw the cars and 18 wheelers in our rear view mirror hitting each other then the white ford with the RV was hit, and it was like we had a bubble around us," She said.

Brittany Sumner, who witnessed the horrific crash, a gave description of her experience, saying, "we were scared. Our car stopped just in time. The jack-knifed truck almost hit us head on but we didn’t get hit at all."
