BEAUMONT - A man has been arrested and charged with assaulting a mailman who was delivering mail in the north end of Beaumont on Friday morning.
Ron Cooper, 30, was arrested after he allegedly punched a U.S. Postal carrier in the face Friday morning.
A 42 year veteran U.S. Postal Carrier called Beaumont Police shortly after 10 a.m.to report that he had been assaulted while delivering mail in the area of Pittsburgh and East Lucas according to a release from the Beaumont police Department.
The carrier was in his marked U.S. Postal Service vehicle at the corner of Lucas and Cleveland when Cooper walked up to the vehicle and punched the carrier once in the face with his fist according to the release.
The carrier then called 911 and followed Cooper until officers arrived and took Cooper into custody without incident the release said.
Cooper refused to make a statement to police and gave no indication as to why he had punched the carrier according to the release.
He was transported to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility where he is currently being held on a third degree felony charge of "assault against a government contractor or employee," according to jailers.
Cooper's bond has not been set and will not be set until he sees a judge which will most likely be tomorrow according to jailers.
The U.S. Postmaster as well as the Beaumont Police ID unit also responded to the scene according to the release.
