Local group combating hunger before Thanksgiving

Dozens wait in cold to receive thanksgiving turkey

BEAUMONT - A local organization doing good, more than 400 people will not spend thanksgiving with hunger.

The Cathedral Community Development Corporation in Beaumont is giving away ingredients for a Thanksgiving feast to those needing a helping hand this holiday season.

For Raymond Morris, donations as such are sometimes a necessity.

“I me myself have been homeless, this is a survival thing for those who don't have,” says Raymond.

He knows first-hand what it's like to be hungry.

“If you don't have, you have to do what you have to do,” he says.

Raymond says he was once homeless for over 2 months, the toughest part, not having the bare necessities.

“Not knowing where you're going to sleep or eat was tough,” he says.

He is one of the dozens waiting in line Saturday to receive a free turkey and other meal ingredients from a local ministry.

Terri Provost, Volunteer of the organization says, “We’re here to feed whoever comes, as long as we have anything we will supply.”

The Cathedral Community Development Corporation in Beaumont has been working tirelessly to help reduce hunger.

The organization wants to give Southeast Texans something to feed their bodies, and hope to feed their souls.

“Know that you're blessed,” says Provost.

“It's not about the material things you have in life,” she explains.

Many people like Raymond will now be able to enjoy a good meal on thanksgiving.
He's already planning out how to prepare the feast.

“It depends on what I get. Turkey, I’ll bake it, stuffing I’ll bake it. If I get a chicken, I’ll make gumbo or something,” says Raymond.

With every turkey being handed out, is a reminder that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving.

“Love one another and have a good heart,” says Provost.

If you're in desperate need of food, the group provides meals on the first and third Saturday of every month.
