Jefferson County jury orders International Paper to pay Beaumont's Signature Industrial $122M

A Jefferson County jury Thursday awarded Signature Industrial Services and its owner a combined $122 million for a breach of contract ruling against International Paper.

BEAUMONT - A Jefferson County jury Thursday awarded Signature Industrial Services and its owner a combined $122 million for a breach of contract ruling against International Paper.

The jury took about seven hours to deliberate before they delivered their verdict. The trial itself took about three weeks to complete in the 60th Judicial District in front of Judge Justin Sanderson.

Beaumont law firm Reaud, Morgan and Quinn represented Signature Industrial in the lawsuit.

Signature Industrial Services sued International Paper after they claimed they were not paid for work that was completed at International Paper's Orange Containerboard Mill.

Evidence presented during trial showed the bidding process for a project to repair an instrumental unit at its Orange facility was flawed, and the work was eventually performed without a proper bidding process. Because International Paper needed the work done quickly, Signature Industrial agreed to get work started quickly so the plant could be restarted quicker.

Evidence presented in court showed that some invoices were paid, some were not paid at all and others were partially paid.

Signature Industrial claimed the unpaid bills eventually snowballed, causing major financial trouble for the company and its owner, Jeff Ogden.

Testimony showed that International Paper never complained about the work performed by Signature Industrial, but that they just wanted proper billing to be performed, including requesting specific details from Signal Industrial about what they needed to justify the expenses.

The $122 million combined award went to Signature Industrial and Ogden
