BEAUMONT - The family of a Beaumont man shot dead after he startled a burglar in his west-end home sat silently Tuesday morning as opening statements began in the trial of the man accused of pulling the trigger.

Tyrece D’Andre Harris, 18, of Beaumont, is charged with murder in the 2016 shooting death of Jimmy Bertrand, 52, of Beaumont. According to 12News file stories, Harris slipped into Bertrand’s garage and was trying to get into the house on April 26, 2016.  Bertrand went to check on the noise.  When he turned on the light, police say Harris killed him with one shot.

Bertrand’s wife found his body.  Her frantic 911 call was played in the courtroom Tuesday causing an emotional reaction among his family.  Some cried and held hands while listening to the recording. The prosecution also presented evidence showing Harris’ DNA was found at the scene.

12News’ William Blanchette is covering the trial and will have a live report from the courthouse at 5,6, and 6:30.
