Groves Christmas parade canceled due to PNG's playoff game on Saturday

The Groves Chamber of Commerce canceled this weekend's parade due to PNG's run in the high school football playoffs

GROVES - The Groves Chamber of Commerce is canceling its annual lighted Christmas parade due to football.

The PNG Indians will be competing in their area round matchup against College Station in Humble on Saturday December 2.

The cancellation was met with mixed reactions by community members. Delci Lovelace, who has lived in Mid-County her whole life says it’s a family tradition to attend the parade.

"When I drove by the chambers and saw the sign that it was canceled, it was pretty saddening and it was a discernment, really," Lovelace said.

Kacie Wallace, a PNG senior who plays on the girls' soccer team is excited to see her classmates play in Saturday’s game.

"I guess it is disappointing for all the people who are still in it [the parade] but it's good that the football team is going so far in the playoffs," Wallace said.

Don Sodman, vice president of the Groves Chamber of Commerce board of directors says they assessed all their options before canceling the parade altogether.

"The high school marching band, the Indianettes and cheerleaders are pretty much the centerpiece of the parade," Sodman said.

“When you try to reschedule the parade, you have Santa’s schedule which you might imagine is pretty busy this time of year, you’ve got security, participants in the parade, the organizers and people who help with the parade and rescheduling that gets tough,” Sodman added.

Mid-County residents can still celebrate Christmas as a community at the Groves’ Christmas Tree lighting ceremony at Celebration Park on Friday at 6:00 p.m.

A Cardinal Quintet brass ensemble and Groves Elementary fifth grade choir will be performing.
