GPS tracker leads Beaumont police to stolen Mercedes, driver indicted

BEAUMONT - An indictment handed up this week says a man who stole a brand new Mercedes was arrested the same day thanks to GPS tracking.

Benjamin Daniel Barker, 38, of Beaumont, is charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle.

The indictment says on March 7, Barker went to Mike Smith Mercedes located at 1865 IH 10 S in Beaumont.  He was able to get the key to a car and drove off.  The GPS tracker was switched on after the car was taken.  Officers then tracked the car to an area of Highland Ave. near Lavaca.  Police pulled the car over and took Barker in custody.  He was later identified by witnesses as the man who took the car.

Barker was taken to the Jefferson County jail. He remains held on $8,000 bond.
