ORANGE COUNTY - The early voting numbers are out and it appears there is a great interest in a proposed hospital district in Orange County with over 5,000 total votes cast on Wednesday.
Since the closure of the Baptist Orange Hospital and the emergency room people are forced to travel a pretty good distance for medical care.
According to the early voting numbers from December 13 most of the votes come from Vidor with 1,259 votes.
There was 1,167 that voted in Bridge City, Orange had 1,211 votes and 435 votes in Mauriceville.
There were 782 people who cast in their votes by mail but the rest of the votes were cast in person.
If the majority of the votes are in favor of the district the next step would be to appoint a board of directors.
The directors would decide the format of the hospital, meaning how much it would cost, any partnerships and other details related to the operation of the facility according to County Judge Brint Carlton.
This could mean depending on expenditures that tax payers could face a tax hike from 0 to 18 percent or 18 cents per 100 dollars of a property’s assessed value.
Early voting will last until Friday. The election for the Hospital district will be on December 19. To find out where to vote go here.
