Friend remembers Beaumont man found fatally shot after single vehicle wreck

A close friend and fraternity brother of Chase Taylor shares his memories of the Beaumont man

BEAUMONT - "Chase Taylor's loss will be a loss felt around Beaumont," Taylor said.

Adonis Bateaste could not believe that his fraternity brother and friend of eight years Chase Taylor was dead.

"I've never heard anyone say a negative thing about Chase, I've never heard Chase say a negative thing about anybody else, he was just the most positive person I've ever known, he always had a smile on his face," Bateaste said.

Bateaste says Chase Taylor and Jacob Ferrill had wished him a happy birthday on Monday. It was the last words he'd ever share with his friend.

Taylor, a 23-year-old from Beaumont was a passenger in a truck driven by 21-year-old Beaumont man Jacob Ferrill.

Taylor was found dead in the truck with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the right side of his head. A handgun was found in Taylor’s lap.

Ferrill was extricated from the Ford F-250 he was driving and was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital with serious injuries, according to a press release from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Marcus McLellan says they are waiting to talk with Ferrill to learn what happened leading up to the crash.

The truck left the roadway crashed along westbound Highway 90 just west of Meeker Road, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

"Chase was a role model in our fraternity. He was always the fun guy but he would always hold us accountable if we were messing up. I know a lot of guys that are better men because of the examples that Chase Taylor set," Bateaste said.

Troopers were dispatched to the wreck at about 4 a.m. and are working with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office to investigate the incident.
