Felon with gun tries to outrun Beaumont police, goes to jail

BEAUMONT - A Beaumont man Thursday learned that if you are a convicted felon with a gun in your car, you will go to jail if the police find out.

According to a news release from the Beaumont Police Department, David Ashton Wells, 38, of Beaumont, was pulled over on a traffic stop near 11th Street and Sweetgum.  Police say Wells ran from the car and was quickly caught by the officer.

Dispatch confirmed to the officer that Wells was a convicted felon.  During a search of his car, they found marijuana and a firearm. Wells was placed under arrest for evading and felon in possession of a firearm. He was taken to the Jefferson County Jail.

A background search of Wells found at least five recent burglary and drug charges.
