Effort under way to help hungry seniors in SETX

SOUTHEAST TEXAS - The face of hunger in Southeast Texas is often that of seniors facing the choice of paying for medicine, rent and other expenses, or buying food for the day.

According to the Southeast Texas Food bank, 20% of people served by southeast Texas hunger relief organizations are age 60 or older.

The Southeast Texas Food Bank has been selected as a contractor for the federal Commodity Supplemental Food Program (Senior Food Box Program) to distribute 2,000 boxes of food to qualifying seniors each month. The food bank is enrolling seniors now.  Seniors who are 60 or older and whose income level is 130 percent or less of the federal poverty level for their household size are eligible to enroll.

The food bank is holding distribution and enrollment events for seniors.  The next round of sign-ups will be held in Orange on July 11.  Here’s the schedule:

  • 10 am – 11 am Heritage Center of Orange 100 College St. Orange, TX
  • 11 am – 12 pm  Orange Christian Services  2518 W Park Ave.         Orange, TX
