Dozens get head start in Holidays with early Thanksgiving meal by Salvation Army

BEAUMONT - Some Southeast Texans got a head start on their Thanksgiving turkey on Wednesday, dozens gathered at the Salvation Army in Beaumont for a nice warm meal.

"Even though Harvey was a devastation, we are still here," says Captain Donald Marvels with the Salvation Army.

Gratitude filled the room as sweet potato, cornbread and turkey filled the bellies of dozens of people fighting different storms.

"That's what this time of the year is all about," Captain Marvels says.

And as a family, the group is coming together to the dinner table to give thanks for the little blessings that they have.

"Family is very important and Thanksgiving is when you should enjoy with your family,"

A sign that the smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.

"It's good to see people get a meal and smile," Captain Marvels says.

And even before the turkey is cold, the Salvation Army is already getting ready for a busy Christmas season.

Captain Marvels says that over 500 people have already signed up to receive help for Christmas.
