Community 'fed up' with recent crime down Cooks Lake Road

12News reporter Kelsey Johnson talks to Cooks Lake Road resident Sheila Smith about the shooting that happened Saturday.

Charges are pending for two people accused of being involved in an altercation and shooting with a law enforcement officer and a citizen on Cooks Lake Road Saturday night.

The Hardin County Sheriff's Office says an unidentified man and the passenger in his car were both arrested following the incident. Charges are expected soon.

Major Dennis Allen with the Hardin County Sheriff's Office reports that an off-duty Chambers County deputy stopped a vehicle that was allegedly driving in a dangerous manner on Cooks Lake Road just before 6 p.m.

The driver is said to have pulled out a handgun and fired a shot at the off-duty deputy. The law enforcement officer was not struck. A nearby witness who was helping the deputy received a gunshot wound to the foot.

The passenger from the vehicle was said to have assaulted the off-duty deputy as well as the citizen.

The witness was treated at Baptist Hospital in Beaumont for non-fatal injuries. The suspect driver was later taken to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the vehicle and his passenger were both arrested and taken to the Hardin County Jail.

No charges have been filed at this time but deputies expect charges upon completion of the investigation.

Names of the suspects have not yet been released.

Reports indicate that one of the suspects in the investigation appears to have outstanding warrants of removal pending with ICE.

The second suspect is also believed to not be legally in the United States and subject to removal.

The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office will be working with ICE on the matter.
