Coast Guard calls off search for missing man

HOUSTON - The Coast Guard has called off a search for a man who went missing near the San Luis Pass Bridge Friday morning.

Crews canceled the search at 9:30 Saturday morning.

Officials said Jacob Szydlowski, 19, was last seen wearing a black shirt and tan shorts on the Galveston side of San Luis Pass.

Searches were conducted by an Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew, Station Freeport boat crew and Coast Guard Cutter Pompano crew.

Gulf Coast Rescue, Equisearch and Galveston Island Beach Patrol also assisted with search efforts covering 230 square miles.

Shortly after 8 a.m. Friday, a wade fisherman contacted Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders to report that he and Szydlowski had been pulled under by strong currents while wade fishing and he did not see Szydlowski resurface.
