Brookeland man sent to hospital after log-truck collision

JASPER COUNTY - A 63-year-old man was seriously injured Friday morning in an accident involving a log truck on US 69 in Jasper County.

Department of Public Safety Sgt. Stephanie Davis told 12News the accident happened around 6:30 a.m. approximately four miles south of Buna.  Sgt. Davis said A 1997 Freightliner log truck loaded with timber was going east on CR 721.  The log truck crossed the southbound traffic lanes of US 96, pulled into the crossover and waited to make a left turn onto US 96 north.  However, the log truck's timber spilled into both southbound traffic lanes of US 96.   A second 18-wheeler was going south on US 96 in the outside lane and a 2015 Chevrolet pickup truck was behind the southbound 18-wheeler.  The driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck moved into the inside lane to pass and drove underneath the logs that were extended from the stopped log truck.

The driver of the Chevrolet pickup, John Ulmer Smith, 63, of Brookeland, was taken by ambulance to CHRISTUS Southeast Texas St. Elizabeth with serious injuries.  Officials say his injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

Neither 18-wheeler driver was injured.

The driver of the log truck, Christopher Cheatham, 28, of Kirbyville, was issued a traffic citation for illegal load to the rear.
