Missing kayaker found

The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating the disappearance of a person thought to be near the Neches River area of Hardin County in the Big Thicket Park Preserve. Matthew Scott Addison, a 40 year old white male from Conroe, was reported missing by his family on October 11, 2017.

According to the Hardin County Sheriff's Office, Addison was camping and kayaking in the Big Thicket Park near the Neches River in a remote area north of the Salt Water Barrier in Hardin County. His family last spoke with him on October 6th by cellular telephone. He was to have arrived on October 11th and a predetermined location but never arrived. Park Rangers and Game Wardens located his campsite and kayak along the river bank yesterday but could not locate Addison.

Earlier today, a Coast Guard helicopter search crew located a body in the Neches River. Justice of the Peace Melissa Minton has ordered an autopsy. The body is believed to be that of Matthew Addison. The cause of death is not known at this time and our investigation continues, pending the results of the autopsy.

The Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Big Thicket Federal Park Rangers, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Unites States Coast Guard.
