Beaumont students gather donations for SETX Food Bank

With Thanksgiving just around the corner the Southeast Texas Food Bank is working hard to make sure families have a plate of food for the holidays.

Beaumont ISD schools are helping out by gathering food donations at each of their campuses.

Odom Academy is one school that is actively gathering food donations before Thanksgiving.

“We need others to experience how others have been in their hardships,” said student Jule Nguyen.

The 8th grade students that are in charge of gathering the donations are part of the National Junior Honor Society. The organization's goal is to collect 900 cans of food to take to the food bank.

“It’s like changing the world with different types of people,” said student Reagan LeBlanc. “One person at a time.”

The food bank’s goal is to gather 75,000 pounds of food this year. Last year they gathered about 64,000 pounds of food.

"Hunger is an issue that stays with us throughout the year, basically one in four people face hunger with some regularity in the course of the year," said SETX Food Bank Director Dan Maher.

Maher said he appreciates the help from organizations like BISD.

"We are just very excited that the community rallies in such a large scale of fashion during the holidays,” said Maher. "We applaud Beaumont ISD for being aware of the way the district can pull together and provide food to the community.”

The food bank serves eight counties in southeast Texas and thanks to these students the food bank is one step closer to reaching their goal.

The “Share your Christmas” food drive is another fundraiser that will accept donations until December 8. You can drop off the food items at the Southeast Texas Food Bank. You can also donate money online on their website.
