Beaumont group works to renew DACA applications before Trump deadline

BEAUMONT - As the future is uncertain for many immigrants with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals [DACA] across the nation, a Beaumont group is working to file their renewal applications free of charge.

"We all have dreams to be able to work towards where we want to be," says Guadalupe Gomez, volunteer, Lamar University student who is a recipient of the DACA program.

Gomez is one of the many young people working to help others fill out their DACA renew applications Sunday.

"It changed my life because it gave me the opportunity without being afraid," she says.

She is one of almost 800 thousand people living in the united states under the DACA program, which allows people like her to work, drive, and contribute back to society.

On September the 6th, the administration of President Trump announced a plan to phase out DACA.

"This gave them work authorization, drivers license, the ability to drive," says Jacky Hernandez, an organizer with the Hispanic Proactive Coalition [HPAC].

"It took that fear and burden even if it was temporary relief," Hernandez says.

HPAC along with Lamar University students are working to renew applications before the last deadline.

"Your DACA has to expire before March 8th, 2018,  have no criminal background, and Pay a fee to be submitted before October the 5th," Hernandez says.

This political change is leaving those like Gomez in limbo, hoping that Congress acts in finding a more permanent solution to this immigration problem.

"It makes me think about what I've done and haven't done in my life," Gomez says.

"What's going to happen next?" she explains.

HPAC will hold a forum at 2 pm on Sunday, September 24th at Cristo Rey Church, which is located at 767 Avenue A., Beaumont, Texas 77701.
