Barbecue pit stolen from Nederland non-profit organization helping sick children

Brooke's Believers is hoping their stolen barbecue pit returns before they host future benefits for kids with life-threatening illnesses

NEDERLAND - A Nederland man and his non-profit organization are hoping they will see a beloved barbecue pit after it was stolen last week.

The pit and trailer were stolen from ICM Air Conditioning off of Highway 69.

ICM Air Conditioning is one of the several local businesses that support Michael Voivedich and Brooke's Believers.

"We've always kept our barbecue pit, our trailer and everything we use to put benefits on up here, and we felt pretty safe with it," Voivedich said.

Voivedich says that the chain to the back gate at ICM was cut sometime between Sunday night and Wednesday night when the pit was stolen.

The story behind Brooke's Believers starts in 2008. 5-year-old Nederland girl Brooke Sleeper was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

According to the non-profit’s website, a crawfish boil raised over $40,000 for Brooke and her family’s expenses.

That success pushed Voivedich and his group to do the same for other kids facing life-threatening illnesses in Southeast Texas.

On the barbecue pit, Brooke's uncle, John Aycock, is commemorated for his dedication to Brooke and other kids.

"It wasn't just a trailer we threw meat on, it had meaning behind it and it was special to our group," Voivedich said.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is asking for the community's help in finding the barbecue pit.

Voivedich says that the missing pit won't stop them from helping kids who are fighting bigger battles.

"By no means with this going missing, we're just going to shut down. If this means going back to cooking on small little grills, or whatever it takes, we're going to make it happen," Voivedich said.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is asking that anyone who has seen the trailer to call the sheriff’s office at (409) 835-8411.
