4-wheeler ATV struck by train in Newton County, rider was not on board

NEWTON COUNTY - First responders are working to determine if anyone was riding a 4-wheeler ATV when it was struck by a train in Newton County Tuesday afternoon.

At approximately 1:50p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety received a report of a train crash near Hartburg Road in Newton County.

Initial reports indicated that an all-terrain vehicle (4-wheeler) was stopped on the railroad tracks and was struck by a train.  Troopers determined that the 4-wheeler was unoccupied when it was struck by a Union Pacific train after Troopers searched the area for more than four hours.

The occupant, a middle-aged female from Deweyville, was found hiding in the woods after the crash. The driver had abandoned the vehicle after the 4-wheeler was stuck on the railroad tracks.

This is an ongoing investigation.
