Liberty County man says he fatally shot his son in self-defense

A Liberty County man says he was forced to fatally shoot his 35-year-old son after his son turned from beating his own wife to attacking him.

The shooting took place at the home of the father, 67-year-old Billy Wilkey, at 723 County Road 2061, near Hardin.

Deputies found Wilkey standing in the front yard when they arrived.

Authorities say that Friday afternoon, Wilkey's son, Flint and his wife got into an argument at their home.

To avoid further trouble, the wife went to the home of her father-in-law.  The younger Wilkey followed.

They got into another argument. Flint Wilkey left and then came back again.  This time, the altercation got physical.

According to witnesses, Flint hit his wife with his fist and pulled her hair.  He pulled his wife outside and tried to get her into his truck.

Billy Wilkey tried to stop his son from beating his wife, when he says the younger Flint turned on him.

The elder Wilkey fired one shot from a 9mm handgun, which struck his son.

Justice of the Peace Cody Parrish pronounced Billy Wilkey dead at the scene.

The father was questioned, but not arrested.  According to investigators, the case will be referred to the Liberty County grand jury.
