Lamar St opens conference with a win

TYLER – The Lamar State College-Port Arthur Seahawks held off a charging Tyler Junior College team 118-110 to claim their first NJCAA Region XIV win of the 2013-14 season.

The Hawks, who are now 7-1 overall and on a 6-0 run, battled down the stretch for their region-opening win at Wagstaff Gym on Tuesday night.

Lamar State-Port Arthur was led by JoJo Mooring's 30 points, 22 of which were scored in the first half when he hit 8 of 10 from the field, including 5 of 5 from beyond the 3-point arc.

With three Seahawks fouling out late, it was sophomore Tre Bennett who kept LSC-PA alive as the Apaches orchestrated a second-half comeback that cut the Hawks' lead from as much as 17 to as few as four. Bennett finished with 26 points while sophomore Ivan Jelencic went strong to the boards and scored 12 points to aid in the second-half effort.

D.J. Blanks scored 13, Jamal Shabazz added 21 and Evan White scored eight as the long-ball dominated the game and the Seahawks' win in the unfriendly confines of TJC's gymnasium.

The refs in this game were active with both teams combining for 83 free throw attempts. The Hawks hit 35 of 49 while TJC was 22 of 34 from the line.

The Hawks return to Port Arthur this Saturday for a non-conference game against Houston Community College with tipoff at the Parker Center at 4 p.m.
