Lamar edged by Texas State in 10 innings

Lady Cardinals suffer first extra-inning loss

BEAUMONT, Texas – Stephanie Meeuwsen had three hits, but the Lamar Lady Cardinals dropped a 5-4 decision in 10 innings to visiting Texas State in a non-conference softball game at Ford Park on Tuesday.

Lamar (21-30) had 11 hits on the day, but the Lady Cardinals stranded 13 runners on the day as they dropped their fourth straight game. Lamar fell to 4-1 in extra-inning games, while Texas State won its first extra-inning game in 10 attempts.

"We didn't take advantage of our opportunities," Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. "The game was ours from the get-go, but we didn't do what we needed to do."

Lamar took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Tina Schulz singled home Jenna Holland before eventually scoring an error.

Schulz held Texas State scoreless over the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth as Texas State (13-33) tied it on a two-run double by Courtney Harris. Shannon Millman came on in relief to get the Lady Cardinals out of the jam, but Millman allowed a two-run home run to Katie Doerre in the top of the sixth that put the Bobcats up 4-2.

The Lady Cardinals responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh thanks to an RBI single by Candyce Carter and a run-scoring double by Holland. Lamar had runners on second and third with one out, but couldn't get the winning run across.

The Lady Cardinals left two runners on in the eighth and one in the ninth.

Texas State took advantage of the tie-breaker rule in the 10th inning as Brooke Baker started the inning on second base, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan Masek before scoring on a safety squeeze by Kelli Baker.

Lamar had its chance in the bottom of the 10th as Casey Cromwell started the inning on second and moved to third on a Millman sacrifice, but was left stranded there.

"We've got some key hitters struggling," Bruder said. "This was a game we needed for our confidence. Our lack of hitting makes me nervous right now."

Rayn House (5-15) got the win in relief for Texas Stat5e, allowing five hits and two runs, one earned, in 4 2/3 innings. Millman (14-13) took the loss, allowing five hits and two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Carter, Schulz and Holland had two hits apiece for Lamar.
