ABILENE - Sierra Whittaker had 12 kills and Megan Schwartz registered nine as well as 15 digs to lead the Lamar volleyball team past Abilene Christian in 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-21) fashion in a Southland Conference encounter at Moody Coliseum.
Schwartz, who has been playing the last few weeks at outside hitter after switching over from libero, proved to be a match-up problem for the Wildcats, hitting an eye-popping .571 to go along with a pair of service aces.
In addition to the play of Whittaker and Schwartz, both Chelsea Grant and Cortney Moore picked up six kills apiece, with the former adding four blocks.
Alexa Johnson guided the offense on the night, racking up 35 assists and helping LU out-hit ACU .202 to .137.
Defensively, Erika Rojas was second on the team in digs with eight.
Schwartz got the Lady Cards going early, picking up four kills as LU pulled ahead late to take home the opening stanza in 25-22 fashion. The frame featured five lead changes as well as nine ties, including at 22-22. However, Schwartz put up a pair of kills to line up set point, and Moore put the nail in the coffin with a kill.
Whittaker got rolling in the second with four kills of her own, and Schwartz added three more as the Lady Cards battled the Wildcats to a 25-17 win. After falling behind 12-11, LU put together a 6-1 spurt to take a 17-13 advantage. The lead was never seriously challenged down the stretch, and Schwartz held serve over the last five points to send the Red and White into the break up 2-0.It was more of the same in the third set as an 8-1 run helped the Lady Cards rally from a 12-10 deficit to move ahead 17-13. The Wildcats fought back, pulling back within two at 22-20, but a pair of errors and a Whittaker kill sealed the victory for LU.
The Red and White will return to action on Saturday with a match at Incarnate Word. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
