LAFAYETTE, La. – Dominique Edwards registered her third double-double of the season to lead the Lamar Lady Cardinals to a 68-60 win over host Louisiana-Lafayette in a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday night to open a five-game road swing.
Edwards finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds as the Lady Cardinals improved to 3-2 on the season. Gia Ayers added 10 points for Lamar.
"It's a good road win, especially when it comes against a team in the Sun Belt Conference," Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. "It's a good bounce-back win after our loss to Tulsa."
Lamar led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but couldn't put the Ragin' Cajuns (2-2) away until Edwards hit two free throws with 15 seconds remaining.
"We're the heart-attack kids," Harmony said. "We have to work on some late-game situations. Once we start hitting our free throws (Lamar was 9-of-15) and boxing out, we are going to be dangerous."
Harmony was pleased with the contributions freshmen Kiandra Bowers and Kensha'dra Smith, who were making their first collegiate starts. Bowers finished with eight points, while Smith had seven points.
"Those two along with Bethany Cox are three freshmen who are growing up quickly," Harmony said. "We needed for people to step up because we were missing Alice Robinson, and they did that today."
Keke Veal had 14 points for the Ragin' Cajuns. Ashley Benjamin had 12 points and Jaylyn Gordon finished with 10 points.
JaMeisha Edwards had nine points and registered her first career blocked shot for Lamar.
Lamar now holds a 42-20 edge in the all-time series with Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Lady Cardinals return to action at 6 p.m. Monday when they travel to SMU. That game will be aired live on www.LamarCardinals.com.
