Lady Cardinals notch 600th win in program history

Shauna Long nets career-high 28 points in win

BEAUMONT, Texas –Shauna Long had a career night on an en evening when the Lamar University women's basketball team achieved a milestone victory.

Long poured in a career-high 28 points as the Lady Cardinals notched the 600th win in program history with a 68-55 throttling of visiting Texas State on Wednesday evening in the Montagne Center. The win snapped a modest two-game losing streak for Lamar (5-5).

"It was nice to get that 600th win, especially at home," Lamar coach Robin Harmony said. "There have been some great coaches and some great players here. It's unbelievable that there are 600 wins already."

Long was 6-of-11 from 3-point range and went 6-of-6 from the line. As a team, the Lady Cardinals were 10-of23 (43.5 percent) from downtown.

"We hit some big daggers," Harmony said. "That gave us some momentum."

Dominique Edwards had 14 points and nine rebounds for Lamar, while Gia Ayers had 13 points and six assists against zero turnovers.

Lamar led by just one point, 51-50, with 5:12 remaining before Long hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Lady Cardinals a 57-50 advantage. Texas State (2-7) never got any closer than five points the rest of the way.

"I felt confident, especially because this is our home gym," Long said. "It was awesome to be able to contribute and be part of such a victory."

Long's previous high was a 26-point effort against Our Lady of the Lake earlier this season.

Ashley Ezeh led Texas State with 19 points. Ayriel Anderson added 12 points for the Bobcats, who held a 35-31 rebounding edge.

Lamar held the Bobcats to 32 percent shooting (16-of-50) from the field, including a 3-of-15 (20 percent) effort from 3-point range, as Lamar claimed its seventh straight win against Texas State.

"I was happy with the way we stepped up defensively," Harmony said. "That was key for us."

The Lady Cardinals take a break for the Christmas holiday before returning to action at 2 p.m. Dec. 29 when they host Rice.
