Kountze city councilman may face additional criminal charges

12News has learned that a Kountze city councilman who has already confessed to pocketing more than $3,000 could be facing additional criminal charges.

Hardin County District Attorney David Sheffield said another possible victim has come forward claiming Councilman Ira Braneff charged them more than $2,000 for a headstone as part of a pre-planned funeral package. However they accuse Braneff of taking the money and not delivering the product.

Sheffield is not releasing any other details on this case since investigators with the Texas Rangers are still investigating.

Braneff is already charged with theft for pocketing money paid to him by a mother purchasing a gravestone for her teenaged son killed in a wreck.

Braneff, who is out on bond, was fired from Broussard's Mortuary and authorities say he made the headstone sales while operating his own business called Big Thicket Memorials.

The Kountze City Council is meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. No word on if he will attend, but we'll have a crew there just in case.
