A Jasper county couple is undergoing treatment after both were reportedly shot during a home invasion that happened late Wednesday at their home just off Highway 96 north.
Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman said it is believed that the incident happened sometime after 10 p.m. when three men broke into the home of Robert and Alma Shellhammer. The house is behind the family's business, Bucks Springs Water.
According to Sheriff Newman, Alma Shellhammer, 73, who was shot in the ankle, was able to drive. She and her husband, Robert, 75, who suffered from a gunshot wound to his hip, went to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital where they were both treated before being transferred by helicopter to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont.
Sheriff Newman described the robbers as black males armed with pistols.
Sheriff Newman said that he and his deputies worked the case throughout the night and the investigation is ongoing. He said there is no evidence that the incident is connected to a similar home invasion that happened Friday near Buna.
