Jamie Smith avoids runoff, and Charlie Wiggins makes political comeback in race for Jefferson...

Two men with public service backgrounds, and with elected office experience will face each other in the November general election for Jefferson County District Clerk.

Beaumont City Councilman Jamie Smith avoided a runoff by beating his two opponents for the Democratic nomination. He defeated Stanley Hatcher and Rose Chaisson.

Smith is the councilman for Ward 3, Beaumont's south end, and he's also the office manager for the Jefferson County Clerk's office.

Charlie Wiggins is the former Jefferson County Constable for Precinct 1.  He was defeated in 2012, after switching political parties from Democrat to Republican.

But Tuesday night, he made a political comeback by beating Karen Johnson Stewart for the Republican nomination for district clerk.

Stewart is the daughter of longtime former tax assessor-collector Miriam Johnson.  Stewart also works for the Jefferson County purchasing department.

Both Wiggins and Smith offered praise to one another calling each other nice men, but each says they are better qualified than the other to be district clerk.
