Investigators: One dead after woman and ex-husband exchange gunfire

A spokesperson for the Tyler County Sheriff's Office has identified a man who was shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire with his ex-wife.  The spokesperson says Gary Keith Dean, 65, used a sledge hammer to break into the home of his ex-wife, identified as Peggy Dean.  A man who was at the house, identified as Billy Stanford, 58, was also shot.  Stanford's injuries are said to be non life threatening.

Shortly before Noon Thursday, 911 dispatchers received two calls.  One was from a neighbor who said they heard gunfire.  A Sheriff's Office spokesperson said the other call was from Peggy Dean who said she had just killed her ex-husband after he used a sledge hammer to break into her home on FM 2827 off of Highway 69.

The Sheriff's Office spokesperson said Gary Dean was shot two times in the chest and once in the head.  Billy Stanford was hit in the cross fire, receiving one bullet to the shoulder.  Stanford was taken to the hospital for treatment.
