12 News HD has learned that HEB may be closing up shop in two area stores to open the new store in the old Baptist Hospital building on the corner of 11th street and College Street.
North Beaumont resident, Terry Hickey fought for sidewalks to on Lucas to help her and others in motorized scooters get around easier. She says when she heard word that HEB may close the store she uses, located at 3930 East Lucas, she called HEB customer service and was told they were closing two locations, the one on Lucas and the one located at 1180 S. 11th St. She tells 12 News HD, "She said we're building you a new store for you and I go, it really wouldn't help us any because a lot of people can't get up that far away in their chairs and all that and I said that's not gonna help us at all."
Back in October of this year, the Beaumont City Council passed a resolution that gave HEB full title of the property abandoned by the city on Stagg drive, paving the way for the new HEB to be placed on that property where the old Baptist Hospital is currently located.
Beaumont City Councilman, Jamie Smith tells 12 News HD, the only store he is aware that HEB plans to close, is the one on 11th Street. He could not confirm the closure of the store on Lucas.
Councilman Smith also told 12 news HD that the HEB located on Lucas is the only one on the north end of town, so he hopes that one will stay open..
12 News HD tried to contact HEB, but we were not able to get ahold of anyone.
