Report: 4 Rangers prospects to be charged with sexual assault in Dominican Republic

It’s the sort of story that shocks and appalls: sexual assault, an underage teammate, and minor league prospects. It will be the whispered and shared story of the coming weeks; often for the wrong reasons: salacious details and titillating scandal.

One can only hope that the attention, and the subsequent punishment, will be enough to also signal an end to this kind of practice in baseball.

In a story Monday afternoon by Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan, the news broke that four Texas Rangers minor league players would soon be charged with sexual assault for an incident in which an underage teammate was held down and sexually assaulted. All four players, and the victim, were laughing, but with players as young as 16 at the complex, the acts committed were still illegal. Video of the incident was reportedly posted to Snapchat, and the players have been instructed not to leave the country.

Not all names have been released, but Rougned Odor – the younger and eponymous brother of the big league team’s second baseman – and Yohel Pozo, a top minor league catching prospect, are reportedly among the players seen on the video.

The Texas Rangers organization did report the incident as soon as they were made aware of it, but have no further comment on the matter, beyond what they offered in response to Yahoo! Sports:

“The Texas Rangers became aware of an incident at our Academy in the Dominican Republic and we acted promptly to open an investigation. We have reported the incident and are cooperating fully with Major League Baseball and the authorities in the Dominican Republic. With this being an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment at this time.”
