On the heels of Lightning Safety Awareness Week, June 23 through 29, State Farm says Texas ranked third in the nation for the most lightning strike claims in 2012.
And now is the time to be aware of the dangers, being that the Lumberton fire department has determined it was a lightning strike that started a fire, which destroyed the home of a former Beaumont police chief.
Although their family dog was killed in the fire Tom Scofield and his wife were able to recover some family photos.
The couple is thanking God that they were at church when lightning struck their home.
The Scofield's plan to build another home on the same land and all they ask for now is your prayers.
The Lumberton fire chief says installing residential sprinklers or placing a lightning rod on the roof of your home could help protect your house from a lightning bolt fire.
