Food relief program available for Hardin and Chambers County

Hardin County residents apply for food aid

Today, the Texas Health and Human Services began its disaster food relief for victims of hurricane Harvey to residents in Hardin and Chamber Counties. Some applied for the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as D-SNAP, at the Lumberton ISD Performing Arts Center located at 103 south LHS Drive in hopes of finding some relief.

"I started counting about three inches every hour," said Evan Catlett, a Lumberton resident.

Catlett says he almost lost everything from his home after the storm hit.

"That's a big thing because it takes a little pressure off so we can help out fours children," said Catlett.

As of now, the program has been offered in 31 of the 39 eligible counties.  Those who applied were given a Lone Star Card that will be loaded within just three days with funds to purchase two months worth of food from most grocery stores.

It's going to help us out a lot to get other things done," said Catlett.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the county will be providing the D-SNAP program starting October 2nd through October.

Those who names start with "D" through "H" will be able to apply for the food relief program tomorrow from 8am until 7pm. In order to apply, you must bring a valid government ID and answer basic eligibility questions.
