Fisherman drowns in Keith Lake

A fisherman drowned Saturday in Port Arthur.

Authorities have identified the victim as Tychicus Sims, 22, of Beaumont.

Port Arthur Fire Captain Troy Irvine  told 12News the drowning happened around 7 a.m.  It was reported that Sims' fishing pole fell into Keith Lake and he jumped off the bridge and into the water to go get it.  A family member said he did not jump, but fell into the water.

Irvine said Sims tried to swim back, but the current was too strong, overwhelming him.

First responders recovered the body about two hours later.

He was pronounced dead by Jefferson County Precinct 8 Justice of the Peace Judge Tom Gillam.
