Fifth and eighth graders will not have to pass math portion of STAAR this year

If your son or daughter is going into the fifth or eighth grade next week, this may produce a small sigh of relief for you.

Students will not have to pass the math portion of the revised STAAR test in order to move on to the next grade level.

Education Commissioner Michael Williams said late Friday that because it's the first year of the transition to the new curriculum standards, the state will suspend the law that says Texas students must pass it.

Williams did say, however, that schools should use other academic information in deciding whether to pass a student or hold them back.
