Deputies back on job after indictments quashed

BEAUMONT - A pair of Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies have been reinstated after the indictments against them were quashed

Deputy Chief Tim Smith and Sgt. Chad Kolander were indicted  on felony charges of tampering with evidence and government records stemming from an incident in a Jefferson County Criminal District Court room in 2013.

The two deputies were reinstated and back at work Wednesday according to a release from the Sheriff's Office.

The indictments were quashed by the judge and the special prosecutor did not amend them according to the release.

The state has appealed the judge's decision to quash those charges effectively postponing the judge's order.

The deputies remain under felony indictment as long an appeal is pending.

According to the release the Sheriff's Office is pleased with the outcome and looks forward to continuing to serve the citizens of Jefferson County.
