Death Row: The Final Hours

If the execution goes forward, Elroy Chester will be put to death in Huntsville around 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The Texas Department of Justice keeps close watch over death row inmates in their final 48 hours of life.

He or she is allowed extended visitations from friends and family. Guards check on the inmate every 15 minutes keeping a record of every check up.

Within the last 24 hours Elroy Chester will be moved to the Huntsville unit from the Polunsky unit in Livingston.

The TDCJ says Chester will be given a change of clothes after arriving in Huntsville and placed in a cell next to the execution chamber.

Chester will meet with the warden and a chaplain who will describe how the execution works and Chester's final statement.

The TDCJ says at 2 p.m. Wednesday Chester will have his last meal and meet with an attorney or spiritual advisor.

Just after 6 p.m. witnesses will enter the execution chamber, Chester will give his last statement and he will be injected with a lethal dose of pentobarbital.
