Oklahoma mother and daughter accused of incestuous marriage

DUNCAN, Okla. -- Authorities in Oklahoma have accused a mother and daughter of having an incestuous marriage.

According to Comanche County, Okla., records, 43-year-old Patricia Spann and her 25-year-old biological daughter Misty Spann were married in March 2016.

Oklahoma City NBC station KFOR said state investigators discovered the illegal relationship in August when investigating children living inside the Spann home. An arrest affidavit says Misty and her two brothers were raised by a grandparent when Patricia lost custody of them. Authorities learned Patricia and Misty reunited two years ago.

Officials said Patricia told them she did not think she was breaking any laws by marrying Misty because her name is no longer listed on her daughter's birth certificate.

An arrest warrant was issued for the pair last Friday. In Oklahoma, felony incest can be punished by up to 10 years in prison.

According to Wichita Falls TV station KSWO, court documents indicate this is the second time Patricia Spann has married one of her children. They said she married one of her sons in 2008, but that marriage was annulled in 2010.

Another one of Patricia's sons, Cody Spann, spoke with KSWO, and insisted she had forced her daughter into the marriage.

"I think she's worthless she put my sister into this," he said. "For you to want to put your own daughter through this, what kind of person are you?"

Patricia told investigators the relationship with her son was not sexual, and that she married him to prevent him from being deployed with the military, according to KSWO. She told them she married her daughter hoping to be able to adopt a child.
