8-year-old girl shot in leg when south Beaumont argument erupts in gunfire

An 8-year-old girl was shot Monday evening after a disturbance erupted into gunfire as she was crossing a south Beaumont street.

BEAUMONT - UPDATE: Neighborhood residents react to the shooting:

 “I was in my room and we heard gun shots,” said Joana Zopat. “So my mom called me and I ran and looked out the window. “I saw a little girl standing there, and she was bleeding from her leg. She dropped down, and we called 911 straight away.”

The 14-year-old Zapot lives in the house across the street from where an 8-year-old girl stopped after being shot at Pipkin Street and Avenue A.

“I was scared,” said Zapot. “I was crying because, I felt bad, and I was shocked. I’ve never witnessed this before.”

According to police and witnesses at the scene an 8-year-old girl was walking with a group when people began shooting at a car. One bullet strayed and hit the 8 year old in the leg.

“It’s senseless, and there is no need for this,” said Sgt. Cody Guedry

Taylor Sostand and Brandy Owens, live in the area and heard the shots ring out, they say they were saddened by the news.

“I felt bad," said Owens.

Sostand has small children of her own. This situation frightens her.

"My heart dropped," said Sostand. "I have a little girl myself. My little girl is 4 years old. This is some scary stuff.”

An 8-year-old girl was shot Monday evening after a disturbance erupted into gunfire as she was crossing a south Beaumont street.

Beaumont Police responded to a reported shooing in the 1400 block of Pipkin Street Monday just after 5:30 p.m.

Upon arrival they found the girl with a gunshot wound to the leg according to a police spokesperson.

The girl was crossing the street at the intersection of Pipkin and Avenue A when the argument between two unknown persons escalated into gunfire when at least one of the people began shooting according to police.

The girl was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital and is in stable condition with no life threatening injuries. 

Police are still looking for suspects and urge anyone with information to come forward.
