Buna ISD investigating attack on 10-year-old autistic student

The mother of a 10-year-old Buna Elementary School student says her son has been bullied since the beginning of the school year, and that he was attacked while at recess last Wednesday by a group of six students.

She says her son has Asperger Syndrome, a form of autism.

School district officials confirmed the incident occurred.

"It was reported by staff... at some point the child was pushed to the ground, and once that happened, several right around him rushed to him, and took part in doing what they did, either to punch or kick," said Buna Independent School District Superintendent Steve Hyden.

Hyden says the situation is being taken seriously and that the students involved have been disciplined in accordance with school policy.

"Nobody involved was able to walk away from that incident without repercussion," Hyden said.

The student's mother says he hasn't been back to school since Wednesday, too afraid to return. His mother spoke to the school district's police officer Tuesday about the possibility of pressing charges.

"(The officer) will investigate, he will gather what information he can and he will take that forward to the county investigator and ultimately to the District Attorney's office for consideration," said Hyden.

Hyden said the mother of one of the students involved in Wednesday's incident has also approached school district police about pressing charges against the student who was attacked. Hyden was not able to provide further details, but said in 40 years in education this is the first time he's seen parents threatening legal action against ten year old kids.
