A spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff's Office has informed 12News that deputies are investigating the discovery of a body in the Neches River.
Deputy Chad Hogan tells 12News that shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday, the Orange County Sheriff's Office received a call in reference to a body found in the river near the Purple Heart Memorial Bridge. Both Orange County Sheriff's Office and officers from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office responded to the call.
Orange County Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Judge Dunn is conducting the death inquiry and has ordered an autopsy. The body has been taken to the Jefferson County Forensic Medical Center for autopsy and identification.
Sgt. Hogan said no other information will be released until the autopsy report is complete and the deceased person is identified.
Judge Dunn spoke with 12News by phone. He said it is believed the victim is a male, but because the body had been in the water for two to three weeks, it has not yet been determined.
Judge Dunn said clothing indicated the victim was a man. The victim was also wearing a bracelet that said, 'I'm sexy and I know it," and the shoes also appeared to be those of a male.
Judge Dunn told 12News the body was found by people who were jet skiing and they called 911. When officials arrived, the body was in the water near the Port of Beaumont property on the Orange County side of the river.
