BISD trustee on superintendent separation agreement: "What makes him so special?"

When Beaumont Independent School District Trustee for District 5 Mike Neil heard that Superintendent Dr. Timothy Chargois would be stepping down, he had three thoughts.

"My initial reaction was that's good because we need him to resign, and then of course the next 2 questions were, 'When is he going to resign?' and 'How much money is he going to try to get out of it?'" Neil told 12News Saturday, the day after Chargois announced he plans to resign effective October 31.

Neil said he later found out that it is in Chargois' separation agreement that he receive roughly $244,000 in severance pay. The agreement states that Chargois would receive the total amount November 1.

"I don't understand the difference between him and a teacher when it comes down to it, we've got people who are involuntarily being let go and they're losing their contracts. What makes him so special that he can just choose to leave and walk away with a quarter of a million dollars?" said Neil.

That's why Neil says he will vote against Chargois' resignation. The board of trustees will discuss the separation agreement in executive session at Monday's meeting, and may decide to vote on it that night.

"I have a feeling it's going to pass, I know there's some other board members that aren't happy with him, but I don't know what previous conversations he's had with them," said Neil. "I'll speak out very loudly against it, I probably won't have anything to say in executive session, because I told Dr. Chargois the other day everything I have to say to him will be said in public in front of everyone else."

Another reason Neil says he will vote against the resignation is because he's confident the Texas Education Agency will take over the school district and implement a board of managers before Chargois gets the chance to resign anyway. If that happens, Chargois would be forced out, but it's unclear at this point if he would still receive his severance pay.

A record review scheduled July 10 will determine if a board of managers will be installed.
